Sashiko is a time-honored Japanese Mending and Embroidery practice. From a simple running stitch, interlocking, geometric patterns emerge onto textiles. With a focus on exploring decorative aspects of the craft, workshop participants will learn how to use Sashiko’s "small stabs" to create a set of coasters or a four-square patchwork sampler.
Choose from various traditional Hitomezashi=one stitch Sashiko patterns on a small grid: horizontal rows, tiny plus signs, linked steps, star stitch, rice stitch, or woven tortoise.
The take-home kit includes a pair of Sashiko needles, four rescued fabric squares of denim or linen, a tapestry needle threader, pattern instructions, and colorful Sashiko threads, plus access to all necessary communal materials. Bring your good reading glasses, water bottle, and snacks.
Everyone will work at their own pace, whether they are a novice or an experienced stitcher.
All skill levels are welcome!
