 "Forest for the Trees" kit (included). We can ship it for a small shipping fee, or you may pick it up at Bazaar Girls. Minimum: 10 students, Maximum: 24 students

Students supply:

  • Two highly-contrasting colors of smooth, worsted-weight 100% wool yarn (about 50yards each) for our practice swatch;
  • Circular or straight needles to match (typically size US 6-8, depending on your preference)

The one, the only…Mary Scott Huff will be teaching a beginning stranded colorwork class via Zoom. Mary brought her inimitable flair to our retreat last spring, so we jumped at the chance to have her back with this class that she invented just for us.

Are you a beginning or intermediate knitter wanting to learn the basics of two-color stranded colorwork so you can take your knitting to another level? We thought so…

If you’ve been admiring beautiful stranded colorwork but are nervous about working with two colors at the same time, you’ll have all the basic skills you’ll need after taking this three-hour class.

Use this class as an introduction to or refinement of stranded colorwork knitting. All experience levels are welcome; you need to know only how to cast on, knit, and purl.

Together we will explore foolproof techniques for creating beautiful pictures in your knitting, in addition to the cohesive, gauge-accurate knitted fabric. Most of the class will be spent working on a gauge swatch in worsted weight yarn; after you’ve practiced the techniques, you’ll have all the skills you need to create the beautiful “Forest for the Trees” hat in fingering weight Shetland by Elemental Affects, included in the price of the class.

Homework: None required, but if you would like to be ready to start your hat at the end of class, complete the cast-on and first three rows of k1 p1 rib indicated in the pattern. Again, this is not required, as we will be working mostly on our practice swatch.

BONUS: Knitters who have completed this class and the hat will be ready to join Mary for her “Stranded With Mary” workshop, which will take place after the New Year, and will include a Bazaar Girls exclusive design! Stay tuned for more details, and photos of the gorgeous pattern that will be available only to us. The workshop dates will be announced soon.

Mary Scott Huff is the author of six knitting books: The New StrandedColorwork, Teach Yourself Visually Color Knitting, Fun and Fantastical Hats to Knit, Fun and Fantastical Slippers to Knit, The Creative Kids Photo Guide to knitting, and The Mitten Handbook. An Information Technology refugee, Mary now leads a yarn-centered life. The many friends she's found along the way have helped her become an internationally-recognized designer, teacher, and author.  A native of the pacific northwest, Mary shares a wee little house there with her family, some ScottishTerriers, and more yarn than is strictly necessary. You can join Mary on her adventures playing with string at www.maryscotthuff.com.
